Portland Car Dealer: Know When to Replace Windshield Wipers

Oregon is notorious for a few things: wine and beer, lush forests, IFC’s Portlandia, and our rain. The Midwest has thunderstorms and sporadic floods; the Northeast receives annual blizzards; but we in the Pacific Northwest have precipitation, and lots of it. Therefore, most Oregonians understand that having functional windshield wipers is essential – but most don’t know how or how often to replace them. Fortunately, we at Gladstone Suzuki have outlined tips for keeping your blades working properly:

How Often Is Change Necessary?

Some people treat wiper blades like tires: in need of replacement only every few years. The original factory-issued blades may last longer, but average wiper blades need to be replaced every 6-12 months. Signs of wear are streaking, smearing, or screeching—all obnoxious on their own and dangerous in the rain. Also look for cracks and fraying in the rubber, which occur from frequent use and the hot summer sun.

How to Change Your Wiper Blades

Most owners simply wait until their next trip to the service station, but if you change your own oil, you can change your own blades too. First, consult your owner’s manual to see how long your blades are. Buy a few sets at appropriate length to keep a small stock of them at home. The process of physically changing the blade will vary with every car. Most have a latch that holds the blade in place. Bring the “arm” of the wiper out to a 90° angle and locate the latch, pin, or screw that’s holding the blade. If it’s old, you may need pliers to pull it out, but the replacement blade should slide in smoothly. Latch, pin, or screw it back in, and experience a clear windshield for another 6-12 months.

Portland Car Dealer: The 3 Biggest Dangers of Private Vehicle Sales

Every so often, a classified ad or Craigslist post advertises a used car deal that seems too good to be true. If it’s from a private seller, it usually is. The news is rife with stories about people who have been swindled, misled, or even robbed by private owners selling a vehicle. Once you leave a reputable car lot like Gladstone Suzuki, almost anything can happen. Some people understand the risk, but before you consider a private car sale, be wary of the three biggest dangers.

1. Faulty Products. Some people sell privately because no dealer would accept their vehicle. Here at Gladstone Suzuki, we have a full team of mechanics to ensure all of our vehicles are ready for the road, but private sales can’t make the same claim. Whether the vehicle had been in an accident or was never properly maintained, many cars have a hundred problems beneath their hoods. A used truck might look clean and flashy from the outside, but after a few months, it could need a completely new engine. Without the integrity of a dealership behind them, used cars for sale can stop working at any time.

2. Stolen Vehicles. Worse than a car that’s about to break down is a car that still belongs to someone else. Vehicle thefts happen all the time, and they’re rarely stolen for an afternoon joyride. Thieves turn around and sell them immediately, so any private sale carries the risk of buying a stolen car. New cars and used vehicles from a certified dealership always come with a legal title.

3. Robberies. While certainly the most dramatic danger, robberies are a reality nonetheless. Because most private car sellers demand their money in cash, some people carry thousands of dollars into dangerous situations. Unless you meet in a public and safe area, you could be lured into a robbery. Buying from a dealership, then, doesn’t just result in a more dependable vehicle: it’s safer for you.

Portland Auto Dealer: For Your First Car, Pre-Owned Is Best

Whether it’s at sixteen, eighteen, or the year they finally get their own place, you know that at some age your kids are going to start driving. The years we spent changing diapers and packing nutritious lunches all seem to culminate at this moment. As soon as they get behind a wheel, they’re out of our hands. That can be terrifying, liberating, or both – and it usually entails looking for the safest, most practical car to let them drive. For the sake of money and savings, often the best car can be found on a pre-owned lot.

Boys typically want their first ride to be a pickup or sports car, and most girls hope for something flashy. With so many statistics about teenage car accidents, parents can’t help but consider how much value new vehicles lose in their first fender benders. Instead, they want to outfit their kids with something sensible and inexpensive—two adjectives no high school boy wants to use to describe his car. There can be a lot of conflict in this first car purchase, but buying a used vehicle can relieve the tension. The price point of used vehicles drop significantly, which allows parents and kids a middle ground for their decision.

Many parents also encourage that their kids partially invest in the car. This might not be your parenting technique, but the logic behind it makes sense. Sharing half-ownership with your kids doesn’t just save you money; it makes them more aware of the cost and therefore more cautious driving. Buying used allows kids to own a larger portion of their first car. Hopefully, then, they’ll be less prone to drive recklessly, which protects them and their new car. Because the models they want and safety features you want are also available for less, a pre-owned vehicle is often the best choice for their first car.

Portland Car Dealer: Gladstone Suzuki Featured Vehicle – 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited

It’s rare to find a car more American than a Jeep. They served as the Allies’ primary vehicle in WWII, and every model is designed and built in the U.S. That’s given them their rugged, industrious image, but it’s their practicality that made them popular. Especially in Oregon, Jeeps are fit to trek to the red hills out east and the sandy beaches along the western coast. They’re spirited vehicles, and one can be yours today. Gladstone Suzuki is featuring the 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited as one of our rare Internet Specials!

The Grand Cherokee is a descendent of the XJ, one of Jeep’s oldest models. It’s still built with the same durability of the Jeeps that journeyed across Europe in the war, but it’s also a great car for adventurous folks and families. Fog lights, side impact airbags, and backup camera/reverse sensing ensure its safety while the 4WD, digital compass, and tow package make it fit for any expedition. This Jeep provides the best of both worlds: a vehicle fit for exploration that’s safe and comfortable for the whole family.

Because they’re popular, Jeeps go quickly. Being one of our great Internet specials at $21,977, this Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited won’t last long. With less than 80K miles, this vehicle has many years of exploration ahead of it, so come on in to take it for a pressure-free test drive today!
